German Design Award

The German Design Award is an international premium prize, which successfully enhances the standing of both designers and companies. Prizes will go to top quality products and projects from product and communication design, design personalities and newcomers, all of whom are —in their own way— pioneering in German and international design landscape. And not only a jury of experts will vote. For the Public’s Choice prize all design enthusiasts can cast a vote. The aim of the German Design Award is to identify, present and honour unique design trends. A competition that advances the design scene.
As an industry competition for the industry that highlights participants’ great design expertise, the German Design Award has an excellent public image. This is also down to the reputation of its organizer, the German Design Council, which has been representing and supporting the German design industry with its expertise in all questions relating to design for 60 years now. A nomination for the German Design Award on the occasion of the anniversary of the German Design Council is especially significant – it stands for 60 years of design culture.
In 2013 the German Design Council is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It was established by a decree of West Germany's first Federal Parliament, which demanded such a body be set up to ensure the best possible quality of German products and the competitiveness of German industry.
In spring 1953 the foundation was established by the BDI (Confederation of German Industry) and several leading German firms. Today, the German Design Council Foundation features over 180 German companies with a strong design focus as its members - they together have a total payroll exceeding 1.8 million.
On 13 June 2013, in memory of its parliamentary roots, the German Design Council is holding a debate in Frankfurt's Paulskirche under the motto 60 Years of Design Culture. Speakers from various different fields will explore the importance and perspectives of the discipline for politics, business and society. In connection with the ceremony on the following day an international congress: Design. Innovation. Europe, is planned in Frankfurt, which is devoted for the first time to the topic of a European design policy.
